Designing a home office today means balancing beauty, function, and technology, and this project is a perfect example of how thoughtful planning can create a space that feels calm, elevated, and effortless to use.

My clients wanted a bright, airy home office that felt serene and intentional, while also functioning beautifully for daily work and frequent Zoom meetings. They were especially focused on having a polished backdrop, better storage, and a layout that truly maximized the room’s potential.

Because video calls are a regular part of their day, the visual backdrop was a key design driver. A custom-built-in framed around the existing transom window quickly became the obvious solution.

This approach allowed us to:

Create a balanced, symmetrical background for Zoom calls
Incorporate concealed storage for a printer, files, and office supplies

By integrating storage into the wall, the room stays visually calm and clutter-free, always camera-ready without requiring daily tidying.

With storage handled along the perimeter, the desk moved confidently to the center of the room. This shift instantly made the office feel more intentional and elevated, rather than like a secondary workspace pushed against a wall.

A centered desk does come with one challenge: power access.

To solve this, we had a floor outlet installed directly beneath the desk location. This was feasible thanks to access through the crawl space. From there, every detail was carefully considered to keep cords completely out of sight:

The end result is a clean, seamless look with full functionality and no visible cords, no compromises.

A Soft, Serene Color Palette with Depth

To enhance the feeling of light and openness, we wrapped the entire room in Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist. This soft, warm neutral reflects light beautifully and creates a gentle backdrop that never feels stark or cold.

To add richness and visual interest, we layered in textural Phillip Jeffries' wallpaper, which adds depth and warmth without overwhelming the space. Paired with curated artwork, the walls feel elevated yet calming, ideal for both focused work and on-camera moments.

A Comfortable Seating Area That Makes the Office Feel Welcoming

On the non-working side of the desk, we incorporated a comfortable lounge chair to soften the space and make it more versatile. This seat serves as an inviting spot for visitors to sit during work discussions and a casual place for family members to drop in and connect throughout the day.

Beyond its practical use, the chair helps visually balance the room. It prevents the office from feeling overly task-driven and instead reinforces the idea that this is a space meant for conversation, collaboration, and connection, not just productivity.

Whether it’s a quick check-in with a colleague, a brainstorming session, or a family member stopping by to say hello, this secondary seating makes the office feel warm, approachable, and lived-in.

What makes this home office truly successful is that every design decision was informed by how the space is used day to day. From the built-ins to the desk placement, from hidden power solutions to the soothing color palette, form and function work hand in hand.
